<insert standard "anti-piracy" warnings here>

Windows is a commercial product. Unless M$ gets paid off they consider
it to be theft. They have had the city police raid businesses they
/suspect/ of using their products without paying. Although the police
and RCMP do not check the newsgroups often, they do check them.

Just a bit of advice... Posting a message like that here is just as if
you were standing on the corner of Portage and Main shouting your
intentions at the top of your lungs. Since this is a public part of the
internet you should be much more careful of what you write. You probably
won't get a knock on the door but a non-zero probability exists that you
would. Since you've been around here for a while, you should know better...

As far as M$ is concerned, as long as you have a Windows 7 sticker on
the machine you are allowed to install the software. Unless you know a
refurbisher (apparently they are mostly still doing XP at the moment)
you are going to pay as much for the sticker as you would to buy the
software directly from a retailer.

Personally I choose to go the legitimately free route and avoid Windows
all together...

and as far as anyone knocking on my door, ya ok. There are bigger fish out
there. not to mention If I get a copy of win 7, I just need a key. and I am
sure you and the thousands of others on here would agree, the key is
waaaaaaay to expensive, if it was like $40 I would pay for it.but that is
not gonna happen that there are cheap keys out there.

There are cheap keys available for refurbishers. Close to the price you
quoted actually. The thing with those is M$ wants the business to keep
track of who gets access to the keys. For example, CFSL donates a
computer to the CLL and the CLL loans it out for two years. CFSL has to
say they gave out X number of keys to the CLL and the CLL has to say
client Y has a key. M$ only started caring about this sort of stuff with
XP. Before that we could install anything earlier with no hassles.
Apparently some folks on eBay were selling XP licenses for a dollar
above cost and M$ didn't like it. As a result they rewrote the
agreements and want businesses to keep track of things in greater detail
now.

For those of us doing the installation (not the business itself of
course) we find it better to install anything else but Windows. None of
this nonsense with the license/activation/registry hacks and we can
install from a disk image in 10% of the time. Plus it's usually free.
Other systems autodetect the hardware and after connecting to the net
(amazingly this only works 25% of the time after a clean XP install) all
the relevant drivers are installed for the hardware. With Linux as an
example, the machine is ready to be loaned out after 30 minutes. XP by
comparison, takes us half a day per machine (but with a KVM switch we
can do four machines at a time). In both cases we go out and get
additional software like VLC. Of course basic software like firewalls
are automatically installed anyhow... Finally, repair is MUCH easier. We
can do a complete reinstallation of Linux in 30 minutes and still leave
all the users data intact. The system will behave exactly as it did
before any problem showed up. No OS is perfect, but as long as you don't
play a lot of games you may want to consider this as an option. What
works really well for the six of us in the lab may not work well for you.

What the hell does xp have to do with me wanting windows 7??
It is a matter of timing. Refurbishers will see a drop in price (which
they may pass along to consumers) once Windows 8 comes out. As I
understand the current licensing agreements, since Windows 7 is still
current the consumer (you) is likely to be charged full price for
Windows 7 if you go to a legal source. The drops in price of XP to their
current levels will eventually be matched by Windows 7.

I was writing about XP partly to explain why you may have some
difficulty finding anything other than a retail license for Windows 7.
We have been told the refurbishers can expect Windows 7 keys some time
within the next few months. Most likely by the end of the year. At the
moment our group and those we deal with only have access to XP keys.

In the end, if you want to stay legal you're still going to have to pay
one way or another. If you don't care (the choice is yours) then good
luck to you...

Dave S.
Techguru says he has XP for sale. If he is a refurbisher/retailer then
he might be a place to start. M$ has different deals with different
businesses. I don't know what sort of deal he has... If he has a single
boxed copy then that's fine too. I would imagine it is first come first
served...

Otherwise, you are better off going to a smaller "Mom & Pop" computer
store. If they take in used computers they may also be refurbishers. As
I recall M$ is going to or already have stopped shipping XP to the major
retailers. If the computer shop is going to *sell* XP, they are going to
charge retail price.

What *I* would suggest is to hunt around for an OLD scrap machine,
which is going to the recycler anyhow, with an XP sticker (not something
which is branded to a particular company) and use that as a key. Save
the sticker and put it on your machine (a heat gun works well if you
know how to use it). From there all you have to do is find a disk image
to match the key. Strictly speaking you are legal since SOMEONE paid for
the license, but you are getting close to the edge. Particularly since
M$ (the company not the OS) doesn't like VMs. Remember, one sticker per VM.

It's not likely you are going to get a knock on the door if you choose
to go another route with this. However that doesn't mean it still won't
happen. As I said, it is a non-zero probability.

Personally I choose to go the legitimately free route and avoid Windows
all together...

no one in canada gives a rats ass about piracy...I have 8 clients who
are police and gov officals...and they always are asking me for pirated
software...no one wants to pay for software....and for the most
part...if you create some piece of software and expect to be paided for
it...you shouldn't be making software in the first place....only time I
can really suggest buying software is with antivirus..and maybe the odd
pc game for online play

I think more people would consider paying for their software use if it
were not so damn expensive. I paid for my WinRAR and Sandboxie software
licenses, but only after writing the companies asking for a senior
discount. I explained that I really liked using their software, but
found that the price they were asking for their license was just too
steep. In these two instances they eventually got back to me and sold
me the registration key for half the normal going fee. Kudos to these to
companies!

M$ is so outrageously big and well financed now, that they should be
able to sell registration keys at a discount to some consumers. The
price they are selling their "discounted" student version Office
software is still way too expensive!

Actually they do. That's why bills C-12 and C-20 are being considered
by the federal government. Someone is getting paid off. Follow the money.

Me too (not the same numbers obviously). The higher up you go the less
they want to go this route and actually warn us off of this. In my case
I just point them either to retailers or M$ alternatives.

Tell that to Apple and M$. Follow the money. M$ has had the city police
raid businesses suspected of using pirated copies of Windows in the
past. In fact there was one government department which made the news
about 10+ years ago. Check with your police clients.

Here I agree with you. I don't play a lot of new games so I have a
small collection of old ones I enjoy. I only installed ME (I was given
an actual ME CD a year ago) on a 750MHz system a couple of months ago
because some of the games I have won't run on WINE. For 99% of what I do
I make it a point to avoid M$ completely. Less hassles and if the same
software works better than that's a bonus. Now if I could only get away
from the hardware problems...

x86, I downloded a copy, just need a legit key.
<insert standard "anti-piracy" warnings here>
Windows is a commercial product.
