uTorrent 3.0 question

I am new to using bit Torrent. I have downloaded a couple of pdf files
and they are now completed and I have left them showing as seeding.

At the bottom of the screen it shows DHT updating along with the
download and upload kb/s updating constantly but the no connections icon
appears on and off.

I had no trouble downloading my files, and I do not use a router so no
port forwarding is needed. The firewall in Windows 7 is opened for the
program. Is this a problem or is this normal? The green check mark
indicating network OK appears only now and then. I used the menu setup
guide and everything checks out there. Any suggestions?

For me its not unusual for the green check mark to not show up for a while.
With really small files it might not come up. Once I get a file I usually
just delete the torrent :)

Dont set your upload speed to unlimited. Mine is set to about 1/3 my max
upload speed.

Essentially they are uploading to others who want the same files. This
is a good thing and a bad thing at the same time. It is nice you are
sharing the data. The bad part is it is taking up your bandwidth. This
is more important to Shaw customers than it is with MTS. Eventually
you'll want to stop the transfer and get on with your life.

Looks like some people are connecting and disconnecting. DHT is (I
think) the first attempt at preventing the Americans from tracking what
you are doing.

You WANT a router. Especially if you are running Windows. You do not
have to set up port forwarding if you have uPNP enabled. This is also
somewhat problematic but less so than not having a router.

Things appear to be working the way they should. The files are on your
computer and you are uploading them to other users. The software appears
to be fine. As I said, you will eventually want to stop the upload and
get on with your life.

As to suggestions...
- Get a router! A Windows computer on the internet without a router is
asking for trouble.
- I agree with Frosty. Limit your upload speed (especially on Shaw). I
limit mine to 10k/sec..
- Other friends suggest getting a separate (non-Windows) computer just
for bittorrent. As long as the hard drive storage is there you can do
your thing without interfering with your main computer.
- There may be a setting to use a random port each time. Turn this on.
- Do not allow non-DHT connections. They are unencrypted. At least with
DHT you get MINIMAL privacy.
- Although there are many legal torrents out there (text books, public
domain software, free software, Linux distributions, PodCasts,
newsletters, etc.) Shaw treats them all as illegal and WILL slow down
the entire bandwidth in and out of your place. MTS will occasionally
forward illegal demands from the Americans to "pay up or else".

I am looking and waiting for a sale for a good solid firewall router. I
would be happy with just the lan cable connection as I have no pressing
need for wireless right now. I had an SMC cable router up until a few
months ago, but connection to radio programs on the net was problematic
so I disconnected it.

Thanks for the feedback. Would this be a good router to consider for
future wireless use?

Asus RT-N56U

I see it's got a very good review and easy setup ( found one on YouTube
) but I couldn't find any clear instructions on how to to turn off the
wireless feature for the present.

A wired only router is more than adequate. Unless you have a need for
wireless there is no need for a wireless router. Get a wired only model,
unless you can't find one. In which case go in and turn off the wireless
support. As TechGuru says, it is a matter of security not convenience or
multiple connections. ANY version of Windows connecting to the internet
without a router is asking for trouble.

This is an existing situation with a single computer. If more than one
machine were involved or if it were a completely new situation with no
decision on an OS, then it might be another matter. As it is the
priorities would be to answer any direct questions and prevent anything
which would lead to problems.
Post by EhBay
Your
knowledgeable and your advice is welcome.
I've been around since the days of the Apple ][+ (for the newbies, it's
a machine which predates the Mac by about 10 years). I've used about 10
- 12 completely different types of machines (compared to only Macs and
PCs) and at least 1.5 times as many operating systems. I even spent a
couple of months (contract work) as a government hacker (in the
classical sense as opposed to the modern definition). All this
experience has to count for something. ;-)

With the group of us providing answers to the original questions, the
priority of the OP should be to get a router ASAP.

No need to apologise. We all have different experiences. Mine happen to
