I've come across a strange problem. My better half shut down the PC
last night, and upon start up today, the keyboard was showing
disconnected. What's weird is that all three idiot lights on the
keyboard were on, and they couldn't be toggled off. I turned the PC
back off and the keyboard lights remained on! Only when I turned the PC
off from the back or unplugged it totally did the keyboard lights go
off. When I powered the PC up again, the same problem. I tried
unplugging and replugging the PS2 keyboard plug with no success. Only
when I plugged the PS2 plug into the spare mouse port and then back into
the keyboard port did my keyboard come back to life. How could this be?

A bit of a caveat... If the machine is an actual IBM, they do not like
starting up without a PS2 keyboard. If there is only a USB keyboard it
will complain there is no keyboard and press F1 to continue.

To the OP. I've never seen a spare mouse port. Generally most machines
have two PS2 ports. Both are generally colour coded. The purple one is
for the keyboard and the green one is for the mouse. Neither is a spare.

I've got 2 PS2 ports, one for a mouse and the other for the keyboard.

The mouse is plugged into a USB port, leaving a spare unused PS2 mouse port.

My PC is approaching 10 years of age, it's CBit built with an Asus P4S 533 mother board.

Something major is due to go sideways anytime now. I will have to budget on a newer PC anyway.

Hopefully when the time comes, I will still be able to recycle some existing parts like my USR fax modem, Plextor burner and one IDE drive.

Bottom line, I'll need to find a real workhorse that will serve me as well as this one has.

Well, a couple of weeks ago my PC just wouldn't start. I didn't bother
to get it checked out, I figure it was the power supply that failed.
Ended up getting a new PC built at Computer Avenue, but couldn't use
anything off the old PC except for the two hard drives that I am
currently using for data storage, the keyboard and mouse. There are
some good parts in that old PC that I feel could be usefull to someone
fixing or rebuilding a PC of that vintage. Where would be a good place
to advertise without getting a bunch of crank responses? There is 3/4
gig memory, a Plextor DVD burner, a US Robotics hardware fax modem, a
3.5 in floppy drive, a extra usb reader, and the Asus motherboard, which
I'm not sure about. I also have the licenced Windows XP disk from CBIT
along with the activation key. Any suggestions or interest?
