I've had an ongoing problem with my PC only downloading partial files
from some web sites. I was hoping getting a new PC with Windows 7 would
solve this issue, but it hasn't.

For example, I like listening to archived CBC Quirks and Quarks shows
but the mp3 download or audio stream only goes halfway before stopping
all together. I tried plugging the link into VLC with the same
results. I am behind an SMC 7004ABR router. If I try to pause and
restart the download after it stops, it continues on for a few of times
and then I finally loose my internet connection all together and I need
to resent the MTS DSL 5260 modem as well as the router. This only
happens on some links but not all. I have the same problems with FF or
IE browsers.

Is this a router issue -- should I be getting a newer router finally or
is there a secret setting I need to adjust?

Is it all large files or just files from CBC? Is the problem limited to
MP3s? Are you running any other programs at the same time?

If you are advanced enough (and still have your old computer) you could
try downloading and burning a live LAMP CD. Then try sending some files
over your LAN. If you have problems with your LAN then it's definitely
time for a new router.

I just seems to be a problem for isolated links. I just updated my
video driver, windows 9 explorer and new flash player without any
issues. Then when I try to download the mp3 link at
http://www.cbc.ca/quirks/episode/2011/04/09/april-9-2011/ it only
downloads part way.

I have a feeling it your external mts lines or the modem
have u had mts out to check to make sure the signal is good?

in the spring time mts and shaw have problems here with water in the
lines and boxes causing disconnects and general weird behavior

try dling a large file from a common site like cnet or maybe the open
office (http://www.libreoffice.org/download)...see if u get any weird
behavior from those sites

one other thing..on the cbc site...are u right clicking and save as...or
are u just clicking the link and letting it stream in the browser?

I just got off the phone with an MTS tech. I bypassed the SMC router
and set up a direct connection to the modem -- everything seems to be
working fine now. In fact the CBC downloads complete way faster and
without stall problems.

Guess I'll have to get another router. Is there such a thing as a no
brainer plug and play wired hardware firewall router or dsl modem/router
without any setup problems to deal with? The MTS tech told me that they
could install an MTS wired firewall router and we would only be on the
hook for the installation fee. I wonder what the catch is.

Try firmware upgrade on the router.

The Cisco Valet routers are supposed to be very easy to set up.
